Dr. Mathews believes in the power of economic literacy to change lives and minds. She centers lived experience in her courses and embraces the power of storytelling and narrative as an essential complement to quantitative approaches that predominate in economics. Dr. Mathews routinely uses deep listening of popular music in her classroom as a method for engaging students in discussion of challenging topics and to humanize economic issues. Her work in the classroom has been recognized with several awards.
